Lilo's Hip

From the first day we got Lilo, we knew she was different.

She was goofy, which fit our family perfectly.

Along with her many goofy traits, she had a silly bunny hop when she ran and she shook her butt when she walked.

Come to find out later, that wasn't her being goofy, she was born with her right hip out of the socket. (Being a previous veterinary assistant for close to 4 years, I felt pretty stupid)

We found a great orthopedic surgeon here who said that she would need a hip replacement. Lilo then got about a million xrays and we scheduled her surgery.

I dropped her off early Wednesday morning. I wasn't really worried until they took her from me and she gave me those puppy dog eyes. Darn those eyes! So I spent the rest of the morning at work waiting for the call from the vet.

Around 12:30 the vet called and I could tell immediately that something wasn't right.

Then he said "Well, I have some good news, and some bad news."

My first thought was, "He had to amputate her leg!"

Well it wasn't that. He said he tried his best to get the replacement in but Lilo had such a bad hip that it couldn't be done. He said he had to just cut off the femoral head and then he described what he did further and I honestly didn't understand.

The important thing is that she will now be pain free and have better mobility.

I picked her up from the vet friday and she seems well and putting a little weight on the leg. The vet said she would have to take it easy until the stitches are removed but after that she is good to run and play again.

For now, she is getting spoiled :o)

And Willow has to share the bed.

Recap

Ok my adoring fans, I know I have terribly neglected you the past two months.

Will you ever forgive me?

I promise that I will in the very near future be posting again, though probably not as often as before.

Here is a 30 second recap of all that has happened in the past two months:

1. I got a new job. It involves public speaking.

2. My grandparents came to visit. We went hiking. We wore flip flops. It poured.

3. We moved out of our place in Kailua. We loved that town but not the tiny living space.

4. We bought a house. It’s beautiful.

5. We moved in. Finally.

6. We got all our pets back. It’s madness. We love it.

7. Lost Giselle for 3 days. Thought she was dead in a ditch. She came back.

8. My brother’s girlfriend had a baby. Her name is Kalynn.

9. My parents came to visit. We made them work the whole time. It rained on our days off.

10. I went in the ocean for the first time since we moved here. I saw 2 turtles and an octopus.

11. We installed new floors, baseboards and crown molding, painted and ripped off evil wall paper.

12. We now own half of the tools in Home Depot. Including 3 electric saws. Why? I don’t know.

13. Stephen now has the funny idea that he is a handy man and is capable of accomplishing all household remolding tasks.

14. We have a daunting “to do” list. We disagree on how to prioritize it.

15. We started going to a new church. It’s 40 minutes away. It’s worth the trip.

16. We decided to eat only organics and as much locally grown food as possible.

17. I have fallen in love with yoga. The studio is 1.2 miles from our house.

18. My best friend Anna had a baby boy. His name is Fox.

19. We bought an Apple computer. It is awesome.

20. Lilo gets her hip replaced next week. Expensive dog.
